Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
This non-invasive therapy uses magnetic impulses to stimulate neurons in targeted regions of the brain known to affect mood. Well-tolerated by most patients with few side effects, TMS has been shown to help those with treatment-resistant depression and other mental health conditions. The Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Clinic is located at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - Madison.
Frequently Asked Questions
While the root causes of depression are not fully understood, it is widely believed that neurotransmitters – chemicals that send signals between brain cells – are underactive in people with depression. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) targets those nerve cells in the brain believed to control mood with a magnetic pulse that may positively impact neurotransmitter levels, reducing symptoms and providing extended relief from depression.
TMS treatment consists of 29-36 sessions (depending on diagnosis) to help re-condition activity back into the brain. TMS therapy treatments are delivered every weekday for a period of four to six weeks. Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes, with no long term side effects or memory loss. You’ll be seated in a reclining position with a magnetic coil placed on your scalp near your forehead. You’ll hear a clicking sound and note a tapping sensation as the magnet emits activating pulses. You are able to drive yourself to and from appointments.
TMS therapy is typically recommended for individuals who continue to have symptoms while taking antidepressant medication or whose medication has stopped working.
Yes. Almost all private insurance policies and Medicare/Medicaid now cover TMS therapy, although requirements for previous medication trials and copays may vary.
Yes. If you're interested in TMS therapy, please contact your current behavioral health provider to see if TMS is right for you. A TMS Referral Form will need to be completed by the clinician and faxed to the TMS Clinic prior to scheduling an appointment.

Specialized Behavioral Health Programs Offered
SSM Health works closely with other medical specialists and community support networks to provide additional services.
Our mental health clinicians work closely with primary care providers within family medicine, pediatrics and internal medicine to assess patients at their physician's request. Consultations often help clarify a diagnostic question, brainstorm treatment options, and assess the patient's need for a mental health specialist referral.
This group is comprised of a team of doctoral level psychologists who specialize in working with medical patients and their families to assist in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions. They work with patients experiencing lifestyle or stress-related disorders to prevent further illness and improve health outcomes. The team collaborates with the patient's health care provider to ensure comprehensive treatment.
SSM Health Dean Medical Group
