Cervical Cancer
Years ago, cervical cancer was one of the most common causes of cancer death for American women. Today, that number has gone down by more than 40 percent. An increase in preventative screenings, more commonly referred to as a pap test, is a large contributor to this.
The cancer team at SSM Health is here to treat you and your cervical cancer. Their expertise and supportive care approach provide you with the healing and treatment you deserve.
Cervical cancer starts in the lower part of the uterus in the cells lining the cervix. The three types of cervical cancer we treat are:
- Squamous cell carcinoma: most common form; develops in the cervical cells closes to the vagina
- Adenocarcinoma: starts in the glandular cells
- Mixed carcinoma: less common; cancer is found in both types of cells
Signs & Symptoms of Cervical Cancer
Symptoms of cervical cancer don’t traditionally present themselves until the cancer has grown and moved to surrounding tissues. Preventative pap tests are used to find precancerous cells that may be a sign of early stage cervical cancer. If the cancer has progressed you may notice these signs and symptoms:
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Increased vaginal discharge
- Bleeding after menopause
- Pain during intercourse
- Pelvic pain
Treating Cervical Cancer
Treatment for cervical cancer is highly dependent upon the location and size of the tumor, medical condition and age, as well as the type and stage of the cancer. After thorough testing, working with your oncologist, and discussing your options, your treatment plan may include:
- Surgery
- Radiation therapy
- Hormone therapy
- Intraperitoneal chemotherapy
Together, you and your oncologist will determine the best therapy or combination of therapies for your needs. We’re here to walk you through your cancer journey, every step of the way. Make an appointment with an SSM Health cancer specialist today and begin your path to healing.
