Osteopathic Curriculum
The four tenets of Osteopathy:
- The human being is a dynamic unit of function
- The body possesses self-regulatory mechanisms that are self-healing in nature
- Structure and function are interrelated at all levels
- Rational treatment is based on these principles.
The five models of Osteopathic Care:
- Biomechanical
- Respiratory-Circulatory
- Metabolic-Energy
- Neurologic
- Behavioral
Styles of treatment we will cover:
- Soft tissue techniques
- Lymphatic techniques
- Articulatory techniques, Low velocity-high amplitude
- Counterstrain/Jones techniques (SCS)
- Facilitated positional release (FPR)
- Still’s techniques
- Myofascial release techniques, direct
- Myofascial release techniques, indirect
- Balance ligamentous tension (BLT)/ Ligamentous articular strain (LAS)
- Balanced membranous tension (BMT)
- Integrated neuromusculoskeletal release (INR)
- Muscle energy techniques (MET)
- High Velocity, Low Amplitude techniques (HVLA)
- Cranial techniques
Other treatments:
- Stretch and spray therapy Trigger point injections
- Trigger point injections
Osteopathic research and study
- Answering an Osteopathic clinical question in the current literature in workshops and the OMTM clinic
Educational settings in which the above education will be provided:
- Annual OMT hospital , OB & newborn techniques workshop, during orientation

- OMT in the pediatric patient, focus on prevention
- Osteopathic journal club
- GOAL: Once a year in the journal club series an osteopathic article will be reviewed
- Second year didactic presentation
- To include a system based approach to Osteopathic considerations in treatment, to include the following elements:
- Autonomic (sympathetic and parasympathetic) considerations
- 1 to 3 articles (classic or current) which address use of OMT
- Chapman's reflexes and their use in the treatment of the system
- Review Osteopathic board review questions
- To include a system based approach to Osteopathic considerations in treatment, to include the following elements:
- OMT clinic curriculum
- R1s are scheduled 3-4 times; R2s and R3 are scheduled about 6-10 times each year.
- Evaluation and treatment
- OMT clinic is an opportunity to learn the basics of:
- Structural evaluation, including complete neuro evaluation
- Development of a treatment style
- Experience with dosing of OMT based on patient age
- OMT clinic is an opportunity to learn the basics of:
- Osteopathic coding and diagnosis
- How to appropriately code Osteopathic treatment
- How to document an encounter
- During OMT clinic, a clinic question will be formulated:
- The current literature search regarding the question
- Share pertinent article(s)
- Online Osteopathic didactics used to further education and study (Note, you need to make sure you have a log in for the OSU platform)
