Residency Overview

The Department of Internal Medicine offers ten categorical first postgraduate year (PGY-1) positions in its university-affiliated, but independently-approved, Internal Medicine Residency Training Program. Positions are available in a three-year program, directed toward eligibility to sit for the American Board of Internal Medicine-certifying examination.

Our residency program was accredited with commendation for ten years by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. We also participate in the National Residency Matching Program. The residency program offers a structured, university-style training setting that includes third and fourth-year medical students as well as full-time faculty.

St. Mary’s Hospital’s Internal Medicine Residency is a primary care-oriented training program designed for clinically-oriented physicians preparing for a career in either inpatient or outpatient general internal medicine. Approximately one-third of our graduates pursue a fellowship in subspecialty medicine, notably pulmonary/critical care, infectious disease and rheumatology. In 2019, the program's three year rolling ABIM pass rate is approximately 90 percent.

In addition to the traditional medical curriculum, which includes primary care subjects and outpatient office experience, residents are taught the real-world requirements of today's changing practice environment. They are exposed to the basics of quality improvement, patient safety, peer review, high value care and ethical, shared decision making.
